Just a little note to say a BIG thank you to all the sponsors who helped with donations in our pet photos with Santa this year.  The turnout was great and it was so wonderful to see all the pets come in with their families.

Happy holidays and all the best in the New Year!!!

'Tis the Season....

Hello All!

Just a couple of friendly reminders for the upcoming holiday season...

Firstly, our PET PHOTOS with SANTA are this Sunday, December 5th from 12 noon to 3 pm.
We are raising money, as usual, for the Lion's Foundation for Dog Guides.  All proceeds from the photos, contests, raffles, and donations go directly to the dog guides.  All pets welcome.  Photos are a minimum donation of $10 per photo...Cash only please.  We look forward to seeing you there!  HO HO HO!

Also, just a friendly reminder about your furry friends and CHOCOLATE TOXICITY which is always a hot topic over the holidays.  It seems every year we see a few of our canine friends who have 'indulged' in a little chocolate...usually stolen from underneath the tree!

A bit of background information...The toxic agent in chocolate is a stimulant substance related to caffeine called Theobromine which comes from the cocoa.  As such, the more cocoa in the chocolate, the more dangerous it is for our furry friends.  Milk chocolate is typically 'less toxic' than dark or baking chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa and our big dog buddies can typically ingest a larger amount than tiny dog.

Typical signs of chocolate toxicity are excitability and hyperactivity, increased body temperature, increased heart rate, wobbliness, muscle tremors, and sometimes even seizures, coma, collapse and death (sometimes 12 hours or more after ingestion).   Vomiting and diarrhea are also common.

The best medicine?  Prevent exposure!!  Keep anything chocolate safely tucked away!  If your pet should ingest some chocolate, please call ASAP.  We will often induce vomiting if your dog has just eaten the sweet treats (sorry pooch!  You don't get to keep the chocolate!) and we will decide if more treatment is required depending on each individual case.   Again, best bet?  Keep the treats safely away.  They're for us to enjoy, not our furry friends!

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween.  Next up - Photos with Santa.  Please drop by on Sunday, December 5, between 12-3pm to have your pets photo taken with Santa.  There is a minimum fee of $10.00 for the pictures and all proceeds to to the Guide Dogs Association.  Its an open house with food, drinks and games.  Come one, Come all.

Also, please email us with your favorite picture of your pet(s) and we will use them on our website.

Enjoy this beautiful weather with your furry friends.

Happy Halloween!

I hope all our little trick-or-treaters are ready and excited for Halloween on Sunday?  Just a quick reminder to keep the chocolate stash away from the doggies and keep the cats safely away from the Halloween decor.   We don't want any trick-or-treat surprises at the hospital next week!  :<)

Anyone else there planning to dress up a pet for Halloween?   As you can see, my girls dressed up  last year for Halloween and were delighted with all the doggie cookies they received from the trick-or-treaters!  As you can see from the photo though, they were perhaps somewhat less than enthused about the costume requirement for the event!  We also have a wonderful halloween picture of Joie who looks just as enthused.  I would buy a cup of coffee from her anyday, wouldn't you?

Please do send us your best picture of your furry friend in costume...we could all use a little chuckle now and again!

In the meantime, stay well, stay safe, and have a very happy Halloween!   BOO!
